The church located behind and adjacent to Nathan's house in Manoa has purchased the house mauka of his at 2234 University Avenue, and plans to use it as a parking lot for their congretation. According to Nathan, such use would result in added noise and traffic on already-congested University Avenue and would be counter to "preserving the character of Manoa which is mainly a residential 'green tree' kind of community." Although the church has committed to preserving the house because of its historic nature as a house President Obama once lived in, it plans to seek a conditional use permit to allow parking on the lawn.
Nathan and the neighborhood community are in opposition to this and are currently circulating petitions opposing the granting of the conditional use permit. The dispute has been the subject of several print media articles in the New York Times and The Honolulu Advertiser. Honolulu television media have also picked up the story.
